THE GANGSTER OF LOVE SEVENTIES PLAYLIST

#GangsterOfLoveSF

The stage adaptation of my novel, THE GANGSTER OF LOVE ran from April 11 – May 6, 2018 at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre. The play tells the story of budding artist Raquel “Rocky” Rivera and her eccentric family, who emigrate from the Philippines and settle in the Haight during the 1970s, a dynamic period of social change and artistic flourishing in San Francisco.

My playlist acts as a soundscape for the vibrant world of Rocky Rivera and the play. But, it isn’t intended as a definitive musical survey of that decade of strife and dissent. Included are Perfidia and Lovely Hula Hands, songs from another time period but still an indelible part of Rocky’s journey. The songs appear (below) in a stream-of-consciousness order; I trusted in my inner DJ to guide me while putting this playlist together. Begin the journey with Jimi. End with Prince.

Toxicology Trailer

by Jessica Hagedorn and Angel Velasco Shaw

This flip video was shot in 2011 as a teaser for my novel, Toxicology. Consider it an homage of sorts to the former meatpacking district and the Far West Village of a bygone era. What is gone? What is now here?

Soundtrack: “Rated X” by Miles Davis.
